Two dozen intrepid volunteers gathered at Nature Camp this past weekend for the rescheduled Fall Service Weekend. Despite the relatively sparse attendance, we accomplished some important work.
Though the level of Big Mary’s Creek has dropped in the week since Florence, on Sunday evening it was still much higher than usual for late September. Christmas Creek was flowing steadily after Saturday night’s rain.
The rain that Florence brought exposed anew some preexisting drainage and runoff issues near the bridge. So the major project for the weekend was to extend the drainage ditch on the southwestern side of the road up toward the Boys’ Bunkhouse. Corey Basham constructed a new bridge to facilitate foot traffic to and from the nearby outdoor classroom, Piton Rock, and Buttermilk Spring. The brothers Mehring and others replaced a couple of benches in the chapel, just in time for two upcoming weddings.
